NHSTA Mandate Possible

NHSTA Could Mandate Stability Control

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) could propose, as soon as this week, that every passenger vehicle sold in this country be outfitted with stability control. USA Today reports that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a separate research group, estimates 10,000 lives could be saved each year if the systems were made standard equipment. The new NHTSA rules would likely take three years or more to implement. The paper adds automakers aren't likely to balk at the rule but may ask for more time to implement the feature, which is interdependent with anti-lock braking. More than 80 percent of all vehicles now offer anti-lock brakes as standard.
